Afghanistan:
A Traveler’s Companion and Guide
by Bijan Omrani and Matthew Leeming. Introduction by Elizabeth Chatwin.
Odyssey Publications
US $27.99; UK £17.99
This is the first
guidebook on Afghanistan since Nancy Dupree’s classic 1972 book
but is intended as more than a guidebook. It contains readings from
all the classic travel books on Afghanistan, from Mountstuart Elphinstone
to Robert Byron and Sandy Gall. It contains 200 colour photographs,
an unpublished watercolour by Byron and many of Sir Wilfred Thesiger’s
wonderful black and white photographs. The introduction by veteran Afghan
traveller Elizabeth Chatwin, contains memories of travels with her husband,
Bruce.
Advance praise
for the book:
For three decades travellers to Afghanistan have had to rely on
the excellent but dated guide by Nancy Hatch Dupree.
Afghanistan:
A Traveler’s Companion and Guide is what we have all been waiting
for. Bijan Omrani and Matthew Leeming have compiled a masterful and
elegant guide to this most alluring of countries. Packed with history,
rich in whimsical detail, it is a treat for anyone contemplating a trip
to Central Asia’s greatest treasure and a fine read for the armchair
traveller. Highly recommended.

Far more than
a guidebook, it brings to life this enchanting country with such passion
and humour that even the index is riveting. A must have book for anyone
interested in travel, history and adventure. It also had me laughing
out loud.
